It is the first decentralized digital currency: the system works without a central bank or single administrator. Bitcoin XT was one proposal that aimed for 24 transactions per second. In order to accomplish this, it proposed increasing the block size from 1 megabyte to 8 megabytes. When Bitcoin XT declined, some community members still wanted block sizes to increase. Segwit activated on 1 August 2017. Bitcoin Cash was the result, which increased the block size to 8 megabytes.
